Hello, I’m Rachel and I am a newly appointed chapter representative for SWOP Denver. I wanted to quickly address this feedback by saying: thank you for sharing your concerns with us, and we will strive to do better.

We are a very small grassroots organization at this point, run entirely by current and former workers. We have had a lot of issues with recruitment and capacity to achieve the things we wish to achieve. However, we are all dedicated to harm reduction, rights and advocacy, and we wish to do our best to provide whatever services we can to those in our community.

I hope you will consider giving us another chance and coming out for another meeting in the near future! 🙂

The Sex Workers Project in NYC is a law project of the Urban Justice Center with significant funding, staff, and the ability to offer a lot of services (I personally have used some of their services and NYC is lucky to have them). SWOP Denver does the best we can with what we have. We hold meetings and events, coordinate a Bad Date List, participate in street outreach, and we are actively working on a PROS Network of trained-by-us service providers of various sorts. Many community members find a lot of value in our work. Everyone argues sometimes, many would rather complain than try to contribute to making things better, and the sex worker community is no stranger to infighting but generally we all get along. Please don’t dismiss us because we are not able to offer employment and rental assistance, because we don’t even currently have the funding to support even a single staff person.

I was so disappointed to be referred to SWOP Denver. After moving to Denver, I attended a SWOP meeting last spring. I had heard such good things about other SWOP chapters that I was excited to be a part of the sex worker community and be able to help to change laws in Colorado. What I found was a group of unmotivated people who were more interested in fighting amongst each other than doing ANYTHING!

What does SWOP Denver really do anyway? I wanted help with rental assistance, employment, finding a community of others who wanted to talk about sex work, share trade secrets, work on legislation and do progressive work like the Sex Work Project in New York.

    What a gross experience!
