About Safehouse San Francisco

FROM THE SAN FRACISCO SAFEHOUSE WEBSITE –

OUR MISSION

San Francisco SafeHouse is a nurturing and empowering living community for homeless, prostituted women who want to escape the violence, brutality and trauma of life on the street. Homeless women working as prostitutes are victims of brutal street crimes, controlled by their pimps, dependent on their drug habits, and traumatized by years of abuse, violence, incest, and rejection. They are a highly stigmatized subgroup of the homeless. Scorned by their families and by society, they are left on the streets to survive as best they can. For all but a few, escaping this life on their own is unrealistic.

WORTH NOTING –

San Francisco Safehouse specifically seeks to serve homeless women from outdoor prostitution.

They have aggressive “aftercare” for when the program is completed.

They accept women who have previously left before completing the program.

Although they are a religious organization, founded by faith based people and supported by the faith based community they are emphatic about not making submission to faith based principles a requirement for entry.

Their criteria for entry is as follows –

SafeHouse is not a shelter and we do not offer emergency housing. We are an 18-month transitional housing program with 10 beds for women, and we provide supportive and individual case management.

TO BE ACCEPTED AT SAFEHOUSE, YOU NEED TO BE:

Homeless in the San Francisco Bay Area

18+ years old

30 days clean and sober

Have a history of work in the sex industry

People involved with Safehouse San Francisco

SafeHouse was founded in 1998 by Rev. Glenda Hope, a Presbyterian minister, known for decades of service to the poorest neighborhoods in the city. Rev. Hope began SafeHouse in response to a series of brutal murders and assaults upon prostituted women in the mid 1990s. She worked in collaboration with the Sisters of the Presentation, an order of nuns also focused on society’s discarded, overlooked people. While SafeHouse was founded by women of faith, there is no religious requirement or effort to proselytize.
