DAVID BATSTONE

David Batstone is co-founder and president of global anti-slavery organization Not For Sale, and co-founder and managing partner of Just Business, an international investment group that incubates social enterprises. He is currently a business professor at the University of San Francisco, and was previously an investment banker in the technology industry. David has authored five books, is the recipient of two national journalist awards, and was named National Endowment for the Humanities Chair at the University of San Francisco for his work in technology and ethics.

Mark found his vocational direction while working on the streets of Durban, South Africa with street children. He returned to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2006 to co-found Not For Sale. Wexler manages Not For Sale’s senior staff, operationalizes strategic relationships with partner institutions, and along with Batstone provides overall organizational direction. He also is a co-founder and senior partner in Just Business, which specializes in social enterprise incubation, investment, and consultation.

Hannah works on the International Projects Team, managing Not For Sale’s projects throughout Asia, as well as managing the grants department. Following her graduation from the University of Michigan, Hannah went on to complete her Masters in NGOs and Development at the London School of Economics, and has spent the better part of the past five years working abroad for human rights and development NGOs. When she’s not hidden behind her computer attacking the latest grant, you can find Hannah halfway up a climbing wall, out hiking, or hitting up a local concert.

Johanna leads fundraising and marketing efforts at Not For Sale. Johanna has spent the last ten years driving fundraising, marketing and partnership development for several international NGOs such as Impact Carbon, Restless Development and Concern Worldwide. Johanna is passionate about human rights, civic engagement and public health. Johanna holds an MA in Politics from the University of Glasgow.
CAITLIN ROSS
REGIONAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Caitlin’s first engagement in the anti-slavery movement was in the field working in Senegal for the protection and rehabilitation of children in bonded labor. Since then, she has worked and lived across six countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the United States, leading teams and designing and managing interventions that empower children and women, and that create new economic opportunities for communities affected by human trafficking. Since joining Not For Sale three years ago, Caitlin has overseen the development and implementation of life-changing programs for individuals and communities affected by trafficking in India, across Europe and in the U.S, which collectively reach over 2,000 people every year.
ETHAN BATSTONE
DIRECTOR OF ENGAGEMENT
Ethan began as a regional volunteer director and spent two years orchestrating a number of local events in Southern California, as well as the 2010 Global Forum on Human Trafficking. For the past three years, he has spent most of his time traveling North America as Not For Sale’s key speaker at festivals, conferences, concerts, universities, and faith communities. In just 2012, Ethan shared the stage with global thought leaders as he visited more than 83 communities and engaged more than 100,000 individuals to play an active role in the abolitionist movement. Aside from being on the road, he oversees engagement with professional athletes and musicians who seek to become more deeply embedded in the fight against slavery.

AMANDA BUTHE
FINANCE MANAGER
Amanda works on the finance team where she works closely with both our impact and fundraising teams to strike the balance between traditional business and making an impact on the ground. She honed her frequently-used Spanish while studying business in Spain and working for an NGO in El Salvador. During a summer living in rural Ghana, Amanda saw firsthand the implications of creating a social business, and the potential for change it can bring. Combining her international experience with a B.S. in economics, Amanda is passionate about developing strategic initiatives to connect the untapped potential of isolated economies to the demand of the global market.
ELIN ERIKSSON
RESEARCH ANALYST
Elin builds Not For Sale’s ethical supply chains, conducts risk assessments and develops improvement plans for corporate partners. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and has experience conducting CSR-related research in various international settings. During her masters, she did a field study in Indonesia researching how local labor actors view and work with corporate codes of conduct. As a post graduate research assistant working in the project Tracing Sustainable Supply Chains, she gained experience from participating in social compliance audits in China. Elin is inspired by Not For Sale’s endeavor to use the economic muscle of corporations to foster social impact and economic development.

Hailing from Crookwell, Australia, Tom joined Not For Sale as a volunteer, conducting research on the conditions of human trafficking in the Bay Area. Tom graduated his fellowship to join Not For Sale as our Business Development Specialist, bringing together business and social impact to help address human trafficking. Tom now works directly with our key partners and supporters to help create sustainable impact. When he’s not working, Tom can be found playing soccer and doing his best to integrate flip flops and shorts into our business casual work attire.

VENUS RODRIGUEZ
BAY AREA PROGRAM
Venus has been a nationally recognized youth organizer for over 14 years. She was named a top 25 organizer under 25, working with organizations like PUEBLO, Center for Media Justice, the Center for Young Women’s Development and MISSSEY. She has developed and furthered local youth programs like OWWLS, her most recent project, an outreach program to assist young women working and living on the streets. Her award winning service in African-American communities across the Bay Area has included leadership roles in movements such as the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights where she created the Silence the Violence Campaign to bring awareness to all the killings in Oakland. Venus’ experience with homelessness as a child has inspired her lifelong campaign to champion the underserved. Her work over the years has included informing national publications, politicians, judges, youth advocates and communities on the rights and issues of young women in the juvenile justice system and underground street economy.
TOOS HEEMSKERK
COUNTRY DIRECTOR, NOT FOR SALE NETHERLANDS
Toos Heemskerk is a professional social worker and instructor focusing on issues of sexuality and interpersonal communications. She currently oversees Not For Sale’s work in the Netherlands. Prior to joining Not For Sale she worked for The Scarlet Cord, an organization focusing on multi-faceted care for women in prostitution in Amsterdam. In 2000, Toos laid the foundation for a curriculum to raise prevention awareness among adolescent girls concerning people who would “groom” them into prostitution. In 2001, she and her colleagues started a reintegration program for women wanting to leave prostitution, which now receives funding from the Ministry of Social Welfare. Toos has an advanced degree in social work based on her research of Hungarian woman working in Amsterdam’s red light district. The topic is being considered for a hearing in the European Union. Through her regular outreach in Amsterdam, Toos has witnessed the change from a system of “toleration” of prostitution to a “legalized” system. Many of the women she has met over the last 20 years are victims of human trafficking.

GENERAL MANAGER, NOT FOR SALE AUSTRALIA
Jonathan Hirt is the General Manager for Not For Sale in Australia. In 2010, he graduated from the University of Sydney with a Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies – with a specific focus on the phenomenon and re-emergence of modern slavery. Following his graduation, he took part in the Not For Sale Academy and Global Forum, shortly thereafter joining the Not For Sale team in San Francisco as part of the Fellowship program. Jono’s passion for bridging education with action orientated activism drew him to work on the NFS Academy – focusing on the platform during his time as a Fellow and subsequently becoming the Director of the Academy. In 2013, Jono moved back to his hometown, Sydney, to scale Not For Sale’s presence in Australia and the Asia Pacific.

Claire became a part of Not For Sale through volunteering for Not For Sale Netherlands. She has studied and worked in the field of international development for the Irish Government and NGOs in Africa and Latin America, focusing on education, health, water and sanitation. She is fuelled by a passion to protect and empower women and vulnerable children. She also loves languages and coaching people in a way that allows them to be free to dream and live in their unique way. Claire will be developing and managing Not For Sale’s monitoring and evaluation system in the Netherlands. In her free time you will hear her singing a song while riding her bike along the canals of Amsterdam.

Jael Fraenkel is the head chef and trainer at Not For Sale Netherlands. She develops recipes for our soup enterprise and trains survivors of human trafficking in art of cooking. Jael has been a professional chef for years in restaurants throughout Amsterdam. Jael puts her heart and soul into her cooking. She holds a Masters degree in Sociology from the University of Amsterdam and a Bachelor’s degree photography. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to utilize her passion for cooking and her educational interest in social change while working for Not For Sale.

Jorrit has over 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry. As a marketing manager and concept developer he has managed several restaurants and launched hospitality improvement projects at Amsterdam’s Schiphol International Airport. He has a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of Hospitality Management at The Hague, and is currently working on completing his MBA. He has a great passion for skiing and in his free time loves to explore his hometown of Amsterdam on his favorite bike.

Over 25,000 women work in prostitution in the Netherlands. Most are from economically-deprived regions in Eastern Europe and highly at risk of exploitation.
Not For Sale provides job training and access to dignified employment to survivors of human trafficking.
SAFETY
Not For Sale partners with a local shelter in Amsterdam that provides short-term housing and social services to international and domestic survivors of human trafficking. The majority are women who have been trafficked for sex. Every victim is able to begin the long road to recovery in a safe and supportive environment.
EDUCATION
Not For Sale provides training in computer skills and basic job readiness that prepare women to enter the workforce. Participants are given the chance to learn about resume writing, interview skills and basic business development. We also offer professional culinary training to survivors of human trafficking in Amsterdam. Trainees are taught to prepare soup that is sold to women working in the brothels of the surrounding Red Light District.
Selling soup to women working in the Red Light District enables Not For Sale to build credible and lasting relationships. These relationships provide insight into the backgrounds and demographics of the women we serve, many of whom are from Eastern Europe. Understanding where victims come from and the environments from which they were trafficked allows us to create solutions that build economic opportunities for the most at-risk communities, ultimately preventing trafficking before it occurs.
JOBS
During their culinary internships, survivors gain valuable job and life skills that will help them find dignified employment in their home countries. They experience a normal, healthy work environment that offers them a sense of equality and empowerment. After the women graduate from the culinary training, Not For Sale works to place them in jobs or paid internships throughout Amsterdam.
In 2014, Not For Sale is working to open a public cafe in the Red Light District to sustainably provide stable employment to survivors of human trafficking. We seek to revolutionize what it means to be a woman employed in the Red Light District by bringing decent work opportunities to survivors in the area.
